Event Details

Join us in-store for The Art Auction for Old Growth Gallery Night, an evening of art, film, and conversation celebrating the artists using their work to help protect British Columbia’s old-growth forests.

The evening will feature a special gallery presentation of works by four participating artists: Kyle Scheurmann, Annie Briard, Tess Paul, and Liz Toohey-Wiese.

You will also hear from the Art Auction for Old Growth founder Kyle Scheurmann, followed by a screening of his short documentary, A Beautiful Resistance. The film follows Kyle as he uses his practice of “slow-painted journalism” to bear witness to deforestation in British Columbia, offering both a love letter to these ancient landscapes and a call to protect them.

The Art Auction for Old Growth (AAOG) is an annual national fundraiser that brings together leading contemporary Canadian artists and supporters from across the country. Since 2022, more than 50 artists have donated to the auction, helping raise nearly $115,000 for old-growth forest protection.

100% of auction proceeds support the Nature-Based Solutions Foundation’s Old-Growth Solutions Initiative, which works to safeguard endangered ancient forests and advance Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs) alongside First Nations across British Columbia.

Meet the featured pieces in person, place your bid in and support the Nature-Based Solutions Foundation’s work to protect old-growth forests.

Get to Know Our Event Partners

Nature-Based Solutions Foundation (NBSF)

Non-Profit Partner

The Nature-Based Solutions Foundation (NBSF) was launched in 2021 by some of western Canada’s most experienced conservationists. For decades, the founders have worked to protect scores of native ecosystems, inform critical conservation policy, and play a leading role in building the modern old-growth conservation movement in BC. Now, through NBSF, they are leveraging their experience and expertise to help drive meaningful protection of the most at-risk ecosystems.

Since its inception, NBSF has been dedicated to safeguarding Canada’s most endangered ecosystems by filling critical conservation funding gaps while working with and supporting diverse communities and partners to establish new protected areas. To date, NBSF has helped advance six vital protected area initiatives in western Canada.

Kyle Scheurmann

Founder of the “Art Auction for Old Growth”

Kyle is a painter and environmentalist represented by Bau-Xi Gallery. He completed his MFA at Emily Carr University in 2018, where he was awarded valedictorian. Since then, Kyle has kept studios in remote, wooded locations to document the incremental approach of climate change while simultaneously working on conservation and activism efforts.

Kyle's practice is centred around systemic and legislative approaches for permanent environmental protection, using his narrative-driven paintings as a means for amplifying the reality on the ground in endangered ecosystems. In addition to his alignment with NBSF, he also founded an environmentally focused residency at the Harvest Moon Learning Centre in Clearwater MB, collaborating with experimental regenerative farmers in order to share holistic approaches to land stewardship as a means for new art making.
